freecycle
Cool Site of the Week

Freecycle is a worldwide network made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns.
Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them. Our goal is to keep usable items out of landfills. By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process.

Facebook Update

Facebook released a free child protection application in July aimed at UK teenagers.

After much criticism for failing to protect users from a variety of online predators the organisation has chosen to advertise the UK Police organisations free Facebook application called 'ClickCEOP'.

BBC News Coverage: July and August.

The ClickCEOP application provides support on a range of issues - viruses, hacking, dealing with bullying online and they can report someone who is acting inappropriately towards them online.

Once added to their profiles, young users will receive regular messages from CEOP and its partner organisations who operate ‘behind the button’ to make children safer.

CEOP’s new Facebook page contains polls, news alerts and status updates.

The page looks at topics that teenagers care about, such as celebrities, music and exams and links these subjects to questions about online safety.

It is highly recommended that all MGS students who are Facedbook users consider installing this Facebook application.

The move is also being supported by an advertising campaign on Facebook that will encourage take up. This will include an automatic advert appearing on every profile of users aged between 13-18 years inviting them to add the app.

CEOP

CEOP is the main UK Child Exploitation & Online Protection organisation run by the UK Police force.

Its website provide good clear advice and is an excellent contact route for student and parents who need to contact the Police about online protection issues.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre is dedicated to eradicating the sexual abuse of children. That means it is part of UK policing and very much about tracking and bringing offenders to account either directly or in partnership with local and international forces.
